Dirty Little Secret #30

I'm freaking out a little.

I miss Manhattan, desperately sometimes. Its smell. Its weather. The miles and miles I used to walk behind my stroller. The people and the food.

But sometimes I still have very bad dreams. And sometimes I have trouble getting on airplanes, even through I seem to be on one every six to eight weeks. And that plane crashed today in my old neighborhood. Those buildings are full of families. There's a school and a playground where I used to take Lizzy right near that building. Dirk worked three blocks down York Ave, on 69th. Three blocks! You could see it in the news footage. I could have been walking right past, on my way to visit him, when it happened. If I'd have been doing dishes in my apartment on 83rd St., or playing with Lizzy in the living room - where my big windows faced south down York Ave - I'd have seen it happen. And I'd have gone bananas.

And I'm not even sure why I'm telling you that, but I have tell someone. I know I've said all this before. Why beat a dead horse about my small issues when the people who are actually now living in my old apartment are the ones who are scared shitless?

I know this is different. I know this isn't the same. But how does a plane navigate the canyons of the Upper East Side? It didn't hit the building on the river side - it was zooming up and down York Ave., right past Sotheby's and New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Disney World is a no fly zone. DISNEY WORLD. Are we just so sure that lightening doesn't strike twice?

Scary, scary stuff. There's no question in my mind that New York City will be one of the targets of the next terrorist attack. It's a social, political, and, above all, financial lightning rod. And apparently it is not as well protected as we may have thought.

yah, don't fly your own plane. Hubris, pure and simple, risk for risk's sake.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

I have no immediate connection to Manhattan or any part of NYC other than the fact that I have friends who live there. But 9/11 hit me hard for many reasons and my heart stopped beating for a second today when I saw this breaking news. It's not a dead horse and today made that clear... *sigh*

I'd like to tell you to come back to Minnesota, but the truth is NO place is completely safe anymore.

But we still miss you here so...COME BACK TO MINNESOTA please!

I thought about you when I saw that on the news. It's so sad. You are right, why was a small plane flying there?

I hear you. As much as I love city life (and I imagine NYC city life would be THE best) I still think about getting out of DC sometimes, especially when something like this happens. I just want to high tail it out of here and move to some little house in the country. Of course, if the Amish aren't safe, who is?

(gee, and I bet you're glad I came over to "make you feel better"... sorry.)

Flying a plane isn't that hard. It's crashing it at 530 MPH into the bottom floor of the pentagon without messing up the grass that's hard.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for visiting our little corner of Nunavut. Rest assured that Manhattan is as exotic and fascinating to us as Nunavut is to you.
